Organisers of the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL), yesterday, disclosed that the 2023/24 season will kick off on Saturday, September 30 in the various centres nationwide.
Through a letter addressed to the 20 participating clubs and other stakeholders of the league, NPFL’s Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, also disclosed that the champions of the season would receive ₦150 million, which is a 50 per cent increase from last season’s prize money. Another highlight of the letter to the clubs is the payment of start-off grants of a total of N200 million to the 20 clubs.
“The 20 clubs will, as was done last season, receive a take-off grant of N10 million each to smoothen your operations as the season starts.
“We are, therefore, expecting the clubs to as a matter of urgency forward their respective account details to the NPFL secretariat for the transfer of the said amount, as the season is set to commence on Saturday, September 30, 2023.”
Owumi stated in the letter addressed to all club chairmen and general managers. On the prize money, the letter reads: “After due deliberations by the chairman and our strategic partners, it was agreed that the prize money, since that is what connotes the true value of the league, be reviewed upwards to N150 million.”

The explosive six-bout event also saw Tunde “Turning Star” Olojede earn a unanimous decision victory over Arabambi ‘Power’ Ojo in their national bantamweight challenge bout. In the national lightweight category, Azeez “Latest” Ayobami knocked out Lucky Oyibo, while Taiwo “Gentle Boy” Olowu got victory, via a unanimous decision, over Ganiyu “Energy” Kolawole in their national welterweight bout. The national super flyweight challenge bout between Yusuf “Omowest” Mohammed and Sifon “Best” Iwatt ended in a split decision in favour of “Best”, while Sodiq “Happy Boy” Adeleke secured another victory over Ibrahim “Golden Boy” Opeyemi in their bantamweight challenge rematch via a unanimous decision.
