Aje Comprehensive school have been crowned as the 2023 champions of the 6th edition of the Lagos State Secondary Schools Handball Championship, Opeifa Cup after they defeated Ikeja Junior High School 20-15 in the final of the junior category of the championship at Rowe Park, Yaba.
In the girls final, new debutant, Government Junior Girls College Agege, who were the revelation of the tournament were beaten flawlessly by Ikeja High School in a match that ended three nil.
In the third place match, Ruthina College, Ikorodu outclassed Government Junior College, Surulere as the match ended 16-9 in the male category while United Christian School defeated Herbert Macualay Junior Girls High School three nil to lift the third place cup.
The much talked about championship thrilled hundreds of fans, mostly students as the players displayed raw talents and skills to the surprise of guests and fans who kept on singing songs of support.
Speaking on the successful championship, Director General, Lagos Sports Commission, Oluwatoyin Gafaar, expressed satisfaction with the organisation of the competition adding that he would ensure the development of the talents that have been discovered during the championship.
Also Speaking, Lead sponsor of the Championship, Former Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, DR Kayode Opeifa, stated that the players have the chance of doing better if they get the right exposure and necessary support.
Opeifa said he plans to help the players discovered break into the State team and the National team in the future stressing that the game can also help change lives of people for the better.
The former Handball medalist further said that the championship will continue next year adding that players discovered would be called to organised trainings and camps.
